The Pantone colours for 2021 are finally unveiled! This year Pantone designates not one, but two colors: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, a combination of a familiar gray and the bright yellow of the lemon skin. A marriage of two colors that, together, convey a message of strength and hope that is both lasting and edifying. It’s a reflective choice from this year of confinement, a time when we had to regain a sense of comfort in monochrome blankets at home. These Pantone 2021 colours set the tone for the coming year: strength and positivity. They express deep feelings such as stability and resilience with the promise of something cheerful, lively and sparkling...
The grey of the cloudy sky, comfortable sheets, gravity blankets or low-light screens – the colour evokes our collective experiences of the past year. Neither black nor white, it does not point to an end, just the pursuit of an indefinite period.
This solar yellow comes from the fact that in a world of permanent uncertainty, we are looking for ways to give room to this uncertainty, but also to overcome it. To succeed, it is important to integrate elements that stimulate energy and hope. Vitality and a feeling of happiness are welcome and necessary to face the daily life: hence the choice for this optimistic shade of yellow bathed in pure solar energy!
The combination of these two colours is very similar to Maurizio Cattelan’s viral sculpture of a banana stuck to the wall with tape, exhibited at the Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019.
The combination of yellow and grey evokes a form of brutalism, also called Eco-brutalism, which has become a term for plant-encrusted architecture, like post-apocalyptic ruins that return to nature. It is appropriate to the mood of our time, both to return to the essentials and in search of small moments of excitement or change, and reminds us of the weeds that grow among the flowers in an abandoned ground. Gray is the color of contemplation; it points out things that we might not have paid attention to before, standing out in the midst of boredom. But gray can provide its own kind of relaxation, providing a neutral space both emotionally and physically. Yellow is like an accent wall.
