Nature and art are always the major inspiration to our designs.

Would you tell us about the beginnings of Atelier Toit? How did you get the idea for this new concept?

My husband Ilya and I have always been creating one offs for ourselves, and the most inspiring moments to do so are when we are in our shed in the south of France. Surrounded by wild nature, without running water nor electricity we always feel rich. Feeling the luxury of a basic but very beautiful life in which you create almost anything yourself without too many materials or tools. Ilya is by training an architect and very crafty whereby I am the one adding colours in every possible way and when we're together in nature new concepts just pop up, new inspirations, new ideas for designs and thus the idea of Atelier Toit. The outbreak of the pandemic in a way also created the momentum to experiment with new concepts. As the whole world stood still and all securities started wavering, we strongly felt the need to not just wait and see what would happen next, but to remain creative and in a way also reinvent ourselves. Before the pandemic we have always had the idea to create wooden objects and one offs, however it somehow never seemed to be the right timing....

The choice of the name Atelier Toit - French transcription of Studio Roof - is quite surprising. Did France have a particular echo in your project?

Yes, we have lived in the south of France when the children were small at the start of Studio ROOF, now 16 years ago. After 4 years in the south of France we moved back to Amsterdam, but we have always kept our shed and a strong connection to France. Right now, as the children are growing up and becoming independent, we have the freedom to go back more often to the south where we bought an old mansion last year. Ilya is currently renovating it, and we would love this beautiful place to become a space for our professional life too. We will be designing and working from there, taking the liberty to experiment with new concepts and hopefully bring creative spirits together in the south.

Fauna and flora are at the heart of your collection of wooden wall art. Can you tell us more about your relationship with nature? How has this influenced your creative process?

Nature and art are always the major inspiration to our designs. We love to be in nature, and when we are in nature the true creative process starts. Of course we also love city life but it's important to balance nature and the city. Ilya is originally from Moscow and was partly raised at the datcha outside of Moscow. He feels at ease in nature and even if I was brought up more as a city girl, I have really come to appreciate the basic natural life together with my husband.

Flowers, beetles, wall stems: how did you come to develop these elements? Do you have the will to produce other natural figures afterwards?

All the designs in Atelier Toit are derived from the collections in Studio ROOF. We have a big collection of beetles and flowers in Studio ROOF and in Atelier Toit we take the liberty to experiment with existing designs and give them a new conceptual twist. New designs in Atelier Toit will somehow have a basis in the Studio ROOF collection.

This made in Holland project carries great values and an eco-responsible bias. Can you tell us more about your sourcing and production requirements?

It's primordial for us that the products we create are sustainable for both Studio ROOF and Atelier Toit. Atelier Toit products are made in the Netherlands from plywood and are assembled and hand painted in our studio.

Abstract lines characterize Atelier Toit: where do you get these graphic inspirations, this detachment from the figurative?

The designs are new interpretations from Studio ROOF designs. Studio ROOF designs tend to be graphic and colourful interpretations of natural and cultural life and expressions.

Walls are like a blank canvas in which you can express your most personal likings and taste.
Your creations highlight touches of color as the purity and sobriety of unstained wood: a preference for pepy or minimalist interiors?

Personally I can not live without colour, but in order to allow yourself lots of colour in your life and home, you'll need to find the balance between sobriety and colour pops. It's a balancing act...

According to you who specialize in mural art, what do our walls generally say about us?

Walls are like a blank canvas in which you can express your most personal likings and taste. Everybody can create their own art piece by embellishing the walls of their homes! Be creative, show yourself and don't be afraid of colour!
